EMDR Explained

Your therapist has been talking about EMDR, and honestly.. You have no idea what’s going on. What even is EMDR and why does it sound so weird?

Great questions. My first thought when I learned about EMDR was, “There is no way this works.” 😂 But I’ve learned a lot since then and have seen the benefits with my own two eyes. So let me explain..

Short version:

EMDR is a type of therapy that works to process ‘stuck’ memories, feelings, and beliefs in a way that allows your body to release them. It is done by using bilateral (back-and-forth) stimulation - eye movements, buzzers, and/or audio. Research has shown that EMDR can decrease emotional intensity through your brain’s natural processing.

I like to think of this metaphor - when you get a cut on your hand, you do not have to stare at the cut and think about healing it. Your body just knows what to do. Your brain is the same way. Through bilateral stimulation, your body can kick start its natural processing that has been stuck for whatever reason.

So who can benefit from EMDR?

Just about everyone!

EMDR has been used to treat anxiety-based disorders, PTSD, chronic illness and medical issues, grief and loss, depressive and bipolar disorders, personality disorders, trauma, abuse, and stress-related issues.

Signs EMDR could be right for you or your child:

  • Your past is living in your present

  • You’re feeling stuck in your current therapy

  • You have deeply rooted negative beliefs like “I’m not good enough” or “I’m powerless”

  • You have unexplained physical symptoms like unexplained headaches or sudden panic attacks

  • You know why you react the way you do, but can’t seem to break the cycle
